Our Mission Statement

The Connecticut Peace Coalition/ New Haven has vigiled at Broadway, Park, and Elm Streets every Sunday from 12 until 1 p.m. since May of 1999.

We are dedicated to ending the war against the people of Iraq— a war that took the form of devastating economic sanctions for 13 years, causing the deaths of a million people in that country; and has continued since 2003 with an invasion and occupation that continues to kill Iraqis and U.S. troops.

We are committed to ending the violence of the United States government, which escalated dramatically under the Bush administration and has continued under the Obama administration. We oppose military, economic, and political aggression in its many guises, both domestically and throughout the world. We call for economic and political justice and human rights for all.

The Coalition opposes the continuing wars against Iraq and Afghanistan, which have caused the deaths of 1.2 million Iraqis since the invasion in 2003, as well as uncounted thousands of Afghans, and thousands of American military men and women.

We oppose the widening of the Afghanistan war into Pakistan and other countries.

We call for an end to U.S. strivings for domination and control in the Middle East, which include funding, supplying and directing Israeli attacks against Palestinian civilians.

We oppose the threatened war against Iran.

We oppose all forms of domestic repression carried out in the name of the “war on terror,” including the gutting of the Bill of Rights.

Many of us welcomed the Obama administration to office and hoped that it would bring about a change in the repressive policies of the previous administration which legislated away our rights, destroyed our economy, and treated the world as an enemy.  Many also believed Barack Obama’s campaign promises that he would close Guantanamo Bay and the secret CIA prisons, that the policies of extra-judicial, indefinite detention  and the torture of prisoners would be ended, and that the war against Iraq would be ended.  We hoped that foreign policy would be based on diplomacy, negotiation, and mutual respect rather than military might.  We have been disappointed in all these particulars. President Obama has squandered a unique opportunity to change direction, and has continued the same policies that we protested during the Bush administration.

Nonetheless, we continue to demand:

o      U.S. out of the Middle East

o      End the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan

o      End the Drone Bombings

o      No war on Iran

o      No war on Pakistan

o      Abolish nuclear weapons (including Depleted Uranium)

o      U.S. commitment to a safe home for Jews and Palestinians

o      Human rights for all
